IDEOLOGY

Sims 3, one of the best-selling game franchise of all time, could more accurately be described as a 'digital dollhouse.' The game centers around the creation of families and households, managing the lives of ‘Sims’ in their careers and relationships. In dong more research about the game, I read that Will Wright, the creator, was sure to make certian that The Sims had no literal stated goal or conditions for victory. "Leading your Sims to success or misery is entirely dependent on the whim and skill of the player" He says. This, in my opinion is a cheerful proposition at face value, however, as a liberally educated and critical thinker, and in light of this assignment, a closer look is needed. While playing the game and doing a little research on The Sims, I found blatant ideological undertones that it offered. Ideas of family values, happiness, and even progressive concepts, that all fall under the umbrella of Western Culture norm/s. The Sims proves to be more than just a game – it is an intentional vision of late-stage capitalist utopia. The Sims takes place in a world where direct competition hardly exists, and economic pressures are present only for the individual. Expanding on that, it can be argued that The Sims more so focuses on the individuals' ideals within the Western realm.

To elaborate more on this topic, I have attached a video which explores the different ideologies that this game offers. Within the video I briefly mention two people of note; Mary Flanagan and Miguel Sicart. Two individuals who have devoted several months dissecting the underlying ideologies that video games (The Sims specifically) have. Each of them have offered their thoughts and connections between The Sims and Western culture/norms/ideologies as a whole.
